Ystrad Meurig
The dedication of the church at Ystrad Meurig to St John the Baptist perhaps dates from the acquisition of the church by the Knights Hospitaller in 1158. The curvilinear site suggests that the church has a longer history going back into the early medieval period.
By the late nineteenth century the church had become ruinous. It is now one of only a few churches in this area of Arts and Crafts design (see also All Saints, Cellan), built in 1897–9 by Harold Hughes of Bangor on the foundations of an earlier church.

The elegantly simple church exterior is matched by an interior that does not disappoint. The five-light stained glass east window was made by J. Wippell of Exeter and dates from 1963. It depicts Christ as Salvatore Mundi with biblical scenes, and includes an image of a school master addressing his male pupils. This was John Jones (1842–1915), who had the church built and was the priest and schoolmaster for 46 years.
The former grammar school, adjacent to the church was founded in 1735 by Edward Richards and soon became known for the quality of its classical education. Situated within the churchyard, it later became St John’s College before closing in 1973, and the Grade ll listed building now acts as a community resource.
