The church at Pencarreg was originally a parish church, the advowson of which was given by Richard ll to Strata Florida Abbey, on condition that regular prayers were offered for the soul of his father, Edward the Black Prince, Prince of Wales.
The medieval dedication is uncertain. In 1733 Browne Willis notes that the church was dedicated to Padarn, but appears to correct himself in a subsequent publication by stating that Patrick was the patron. Ordinance Survey recorded the church as St Michael’s in 1889, but changed it to St Patrick’s in 1905.
The exterior bears signs of much alteration, with the building dominated by a large twin bellcote above its west end.
A plaque of c.1825, by D. Mainwaring, commemorates Lady Sarah de Crespigny (nee Windsor), daughter of the fourth earl of Plymouth. She was the wife of local baronet, Sir William Champion de Crespigny, Member of Parliament for Southampton, and descendant of the prominent Huguenot family.
