Llangeitho

St Ceitho’s Church was rebuilt in 1898, replacing the Georgian building of 1819–21. Its medieval predecessor was said to have contained a double rood screen.

The interior contains an ornate memorial to the parents of the great Methodist preacher Daniel Rowland, and he is buried at the church. Fine twentieth-century stained glass fills some of the windows.

St Ceitho is named in a late medieval calendar (a list of feast days of saints) as one of five brothers, all saints, after whom the Carmarthenshire village of Llanpumpsaint is named. Further folklore concerning the brothers survives but nothing more of Ceitho is known.

Ceitho is depicted in the east window by A.K. Nicholson of 1930. He is shown preaching to the local community in a scene at the foot of the window, with a further scene of St David blessing a kneeling royal figure, who is perhaps intended to be King Arthur. Between them is a figure of the risen Christ with a scene of the Supper at Emmaus. Other stained glass at the church is by Celtic Studios (1951), Powell & Sons (1963), and an earlier window is probably by Burlison & Grylls.

Llangeitho is famed for its association with Daniel Rowland, who together with Howell Harris, promoted the Welsh great Methodist revival. Rowland was born locally in 1713, the son of the holder of the living of Nantcwnlle and Llangeitho. Ordained in 1735, Rowland served as curate at St Ceitho’s, soon becoming convinced of a mission to preach through the length of the country. However, for unknown reasons, in 1763 he was stripped of his curacy and despite the pleas of his parishioners, not reinstated. Instead, he founded his own ‘New Church’ in Llangeitho, from where he evangelised until his death in 1790.

Rowland’s charismatic preaching drew crowds of thousands to Llangeitho, marking it as the centre of Welsh Methodism and reducing the influence of St Ceitho’s to the extent that Holy Communion was not observed there for nearly fifty years. Rowland was buried in St Ceitho’s churchyard and is commemorated with a white marble statue, erected in 1883 in the forecourt of his chapel.
