Maestir

St Mary’s Church at Maestir was built in 1880 to the design of J.B. Harford of nearby Falcondale and of Blaise Castle near Bristol. The church served the Falcondale estate and acted as a chapel-of-ease to St Peter’s church in Lampeter.

The building is of a minimalistic Romanesque design and there are three stained glass windows of 1906 by Charles Eamer Kempe. The windows depict the apostles Luke and John, flanking a central image of Mary and the infant Jesus.

The square font is medieval, and symbols of the evangelists can be seen on its four corners. Originally located in St Peter’s church, it was replaced when the church was rebuilt a decade earlier and re-sited here. Two of the symbols are Victorian replacements—can you tell which?

A school was donated by the Harford family at the same time and situated nearby. It was dismantled and rebuilt in the St Fagans National Museum of History, Cardiff in 1981.
